I'm a full time writer, mom, and wife. All of these professions fuse me into who I am. If one went missing, I'd never be whole again. My heart lies in history and kids, but strangely, I've yet to combine these two. This doesn't mean it will never happen, as I'm sure somewhere down deep inside of me there hides a young girl or boy who has been waiting for hundreds of years for that right moment. And the day he or she reveals him or herself to me, I'll merge my two great loves.
Most of my books involve a death of some kind. My characters are either looking for the whodunit or making peace with their loss. In real life, I'm not that morbid of a person. To this day, I can't figure out why my writing leans so heavily in this direction. But it does, therefore I write.
Another common thread that seems to lace itself through each of my books is a father/daughter relationship. I think this might be from watching my husband with his own two daughters—their struggles and accomplishments. The journey love takes with a dad and his daughter is an amazing beauty that leaves me in tears so much of the time.
My current work in progress is a contemporary young adult. Ruthless with its power, a winter storm grounds all flights from the central US to the east coast. But when a teenage girl's father volunteers to drive a woman and her son to New York the journey breaks through all barriers leaving them exposed and vulnerable to nature's ultimate betrayal.
The Best of Me Progress
My finished works are:
The Souls of the Fey
It's the dawn of frontier America and young Sarah Lennox is stained forever with the blood of the death she caused. No one she touches, no one she loves is safe from her curse—until the day she meets a young half-breed warrior who's strong enough to pull even the darkest of souls from its eternal abyss.
On the Other Hand
With a mysterious murder weighing her down, a teenage girl must do all that she can to remember a day and a man she never wanted to think of again.
Somewhere In Between
Caught between the enigmas of the father that was and the father that is a young girl struggles with a new town, a new school, and the disappearance of an ethereal presence she's not so sure was there in the first place.
Panthan's Crucible
On a contemporary stage, a teenage girl's need to safeguard the secret her mother's mysterious death left behind sparks the dangerous attentions of an array of outlandish beings. From celestial warriors gone bad to power hungry nymphs, from paranormal monarchs to shady politicians, each individual she encounters has his or her own agenda, but in the end all want the same thing—Laura Morgan, dead or alive.
Why do I write YA?
My teenage years can be described as nothing but a hot mess. Still, in all the years since then, I can't say I've laughed as much, cried as much, or lived as much. Between school, work, homework, a social life, and their other pursuits teens carry an insane amount of responsibility on their shoulders, yet you rarely find them ignoring an opportunity to enjoy life along the way. My answer is simple. I'm addicted to their energy.
How long have I been writing?
I started writing poems while I was still in elementary. By junior high if a friend wanted a letter written, I was the one they came to. I used to say that I was a tongue-tied mess with words, but give me a pen and a paper and I could go on for days. This is still true.
At around fourteen, I began writing novellas in either verse or prose depending on my mood for the week. Sometime in my early twenties, I began to play around with novels, but it wasn't until my late twenties that my fiction works began to take form. And here I am today—four books later and still plugging away.
